Event Recap: Eid-Diwali Dinner 2016

The E-board - old and new!

On October 22nd, the South Asian Student Association (SASA) organized their Annual Eid-Diwali Dinner in the Tilton Hall. For one night, Tilton turned into a mini South Asian hub, with sarees and lights draped as a backdrop on the stage.

This event aims to celebrate two of the most popular cultural festivals in the South Asian Subcontinent. Eid-al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice once made by Ibrahim in order to prove his devotion to Allah, and Diwali is the festival of lights that celebrates the return of Lord Ram after defeating Raavan.

This year, SASA collaborated with Saheli – a nonprofit organization which helps fight against domestic violence with a mission to empower South Asian women and their families to live safe and healthy lives. The evening with a welcome address from SASA’s current president, Meyru Bhanti and vice president, Azra Tahria. It followed with an introduction of Saheli members, who in turn shared their mission and vision with the audience. It was followed by Hindu and Muslim prayers, and short skits to explain the stories behind the festivals in the respective religions.

Next, it was a night of amazing dances and soulful musical performances! It seemed as though Clark has come together in a huge South Asian family event! Everyone was laughing, smiling and cheering. There was happiness all around! The Eid-Diwali also had an intermission, where delicious food was served from Masala Café, which was probably the most anticipated part of the whole show. The menu featured delicious Indian cuisine and ranged from naan to chicken tikka and daal makhani.

I am so proud as a SASA alum, that each year the events get bigger and better. This year too, Eid-Diwali attracted all kinds of Clarkies, not just the South Asians. I love how festivals can bring together people in a celebration of love, harmony and acceptance.

Take a glimpse at the wonderful dances in Eid-Diwali 2016:

The Boys Dance, choreographed by Reuben and Ishan

The Nepali dance, choreographed by Joshan

The Couples Dance, choreographed by Nidhi and Lubaina

The Senior Dance, choreographed by Minhal and Nidhi

This is my fourth and last Eid-Diwali, and as I look back a journey since freshman year, I am drowned in gratitude and nostalgia, because for me SASA is not just a bunch of people putting together colorful and exciting events, but it is a home away from home!
